Watch This Before You Turn 18! by A24

A24’s Watch This Before You Turn 18! spotlights more than 170 films for teens. Illustrated by BaptisteVirot, the 368-page book is a follow up to A24’s successful HeyKids,WatchThis!, which we also designed and art directed.

Like Hey Kids, the book is packed with illustration, beginning with endsheets illustrated with posters of the book’s featured films and actors, collaged together as if they were hung on a teenager’s bedroom wall.

Following the format of Hey Kids, each spread features a single film, with immersive illustrations depicting key scenes and characters woven between a description and other notable information.

The layout of each film spread changes from page to page, reflecting the book’s wildly diverse selection of movies. As a result, each spread feels wholly unique, despite following an otherwise simple design template.

Watch This is organized by genre, each represented by a unique character that recurs throughout its pages. Chapters open with a mini table of contents followed by a richly illustrated scene that includes at least one character or detail from every film it features. Each scenario is a setting familiar to teens — a school hallway, a pool party, a diner, a mall, and a group hang at home.

Notable animation styles and other unique aesthetic attributes—like black and white photography—were incorporated into illustrations whenever possible, capturing the diversity of the book’s selections.

We watched every film in the book in order to identify the best representative scene (or amalgamation of scenes and characters) to feature, and meticulously art directed each illustration to ensure that it dynamically interacted with page contents.

In an evolution from Hey Kids, Watch This Before You Turn 18! incorporates considerably more film stills, with added interplay between stills and illustrated elements.

Special sections within each chapter highlight specific subgenres (i.e. team sports movies, literary adaptations, musical documentaries) and incorporate both illustration and film stills.
