Editioned poster commissioned by Image Text Ithaca. The poster displays excerpted text and stills from “Zidane,” a video poem by Claudia Rankine and John Lucas exploring a scene during the 2006 FIFA World Cup final when French soccer star Zinedine Zidane head butt Italian defender Marco Materazzi after he verbally provoked Zidane. The relationship of justified text and image relates to Rankine’s pacing and detached tone in the video, while providing a sense of motion and action inherent in the original video poem. The gradient background is a nod to disconnect (and parallels) between French patriotism and Zidane’s own emotional scarring.
